Building blocks to a brighter future for Papua New Guinea local communities

Through a series of local projects and initiatives, ExxonMobil PNG has worked closely with Papua New Guinean communities to help them overcome the challenges faced following the February 2018 earthquake.

In partnership with other organisations ExxonMobil PNG is helping to restore a number of education and health services in PNG LNG project areas which were damaged during the disaster. 

The company is investing in education through infrastructure projects, such as houses for teachers and classroom restorations.

During a ‘Weekend of Caring’ more than 150 staff and contractors from ExxonMobil PNG’s Hides Gas Conditioning Plant worked in partnership with community volunteers to restore Para Primary School. Damage to teacher accommodation, classroom concrete foundations and wall gaps was repaired, new sporting equipment installed, and flower gardens landscaped in preparation for the school to reopen its doors to students for the 2019 school year. 

ExxonMobil PNG is also working with the Evangelical Church of PNG to rebuild several health centres that have been affected by the earthquake. This includes the Mananda sub health centre which was reopened in 2019, that can provide outpatient services, postnatal care and volunteering counselling among other vital services to the local community; and Para sub health centre with a new patient waiting area and improved housing for staff. Five new wards at Juni sub health centre is scheduled to be completed in late 2019. 

Papua New Guinea is full of deeply resilient people who have come together in this difficult time to support one another. It is the strength, compassion and enthusiasm that they have for their country which has been instrumental in rebuilding their community stronger than ever.
